I’ve never felt more welcome in a café/ restaurant. Since moving to Totnes, I’ve become a real regular here and aside from the consistently delicious and locally-sourced menu (which is also great value), the staff are absolutely golden. They really talk to you like a friend, make an effort to remember your name and order and have consequently created a really wholesome community atmosphere. The indoor space is cosy but they’ve also created a beautiful outdoor seating area, surrounded by community flower beds. I’m almost reluctant to share this diamond with the rest of the world, but if you’re visiting Totnes or live nearby, do yourself a favour and eat here. It’s tucked away off the high street and has the perfect balance of energy and peace. The Seoul food and steak sandwiches are my go-to, or the new breakfast burrito (with added steak) and my partner loves the pancakes. They have an incredible selection of gf/veggie/vegan/allergy friendly options, which people I’ve brought here loved. The old fashioned short bread is the perfect accompaniment to a post-lunch hot drink but the cardamom bun, lemon drizzle and banana/chocolate/sesame cakes are excellent too. The apple juice is delicious and incredibly local. I really can’t fault this place and I feel very grateful that it’s part of my week. Once you’ve been once, you won’t be able to keep away!

This is a wonderful eatery in the heart of Totnes and a great place to eat al fresco in the glorious Devon sunshine. The menu is well thought out and there are additional specials on the boards where you order. The food is prepared lovingly, to a high standard, and all the staff are knowledgeable about the menu, friendly and extremely professional. During my visit they were extremely supportive of one of our party that had allergy to a particular oil and went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. What an amazing place. Highly, highly recommended.

Fantastic little coffee/cafe in Totnes and well worth seeking out. Great selection of food including cakes - the shortbread is to die for. Also has a lovely outside seating area which is an oasis of calm compared to the busy high street. We'll definitely make a point of visiting next time.we are passing.

Really lovely community space with amazing food. We tried the lamb burger (15ish) and chicken + asian slaw bun (13ish) which both came with potato salad. These were definitely the highlights, the lamb burger was the best thing I’ve had in a while, and the potato salad tasted so fresh. We also got an oat latte and dairy milk ice latte, and shared a hazelnut cake. Really nice. Spent £39 in total.

Delicious food and super friendly staff in a chilled out spacious location. Plenty of outside space for 7 of us to wander in and find a table. Staff let us order even though we were just slightly outside their ordering window. Lamb burger, steak sandwich, mezze platter and kids pitta were all delicious. Great coffee too. Thank you!

This place has so much heart. Tara and Matty and the entire team are the loveliest, most hardworking people who sincerely care about creating a great experience for their customers. All of the food is made from scratch and genuinely tasty. They are also one of the few places in town that serves organic coffee. So much care and consideration has gone into each of their offerings. It is always a pleasure to visit! Totnes is so lucky to have Canteen <3
